Psychological / Critical Incident Stress De-briefing is used when individuals have suffered Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), that is any incident which results in immediate or delayed emotional reaction which surpasses an individuals normal psychological coping mechanisms.

PTS can be brought on by involvement in or witness to any unusual, abnormal or psychologically distressing incident charged with profound emotion. Typically, accident, assault, or any perceived threatening incident (which might include reading distressing newspaper articles).

Critical incident stress de-briefing differs from counselling in several ways;

It is highly structured
It is concerned with the separation of facts and feelings
Offers a cognitive structuring of the incident
Leads to an understanding of where reactions are coming from
Normalises reactions and offers supportive advice
It is offered to individuals and groups
